Question: My sister in law suddenly has started seeing flashes of light and other visual disturbances in her right eye. She was seen by an ophthalmologist who did not find any abnormalities in her eye. He has recommended that she have an mri of her brain to look for any neurological problem. What kind of neurological problems could cause visual disturbances like this? It occurs in only one eye. It is continual but worse in the morning and at night. The problem started one week ago and has been continuous. Since eye problems have been ruled out we are very concerned. Any insight you have would be very much appreciated.

Brief Answer:
can be without reasons or retina, visual association area disturbances.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor services.
I have read your query and here is my advise.

* As per my surgical experience, the issue with flashes of light and other visual
disturbances can be part of impulse pathway disturbances at the level of rods and
cones of the retina ( sensitive to dim and bright light intensity ), visual association
area of brain or else.

* In minority of the cases where there is history of depression ( as in your case ), the
same finding can be there without any underlying abnormality also.

* The MRI brain is the best evaluation tool to look out into the deeper areas of the brain
as well as detailed neurologic examination is a must to fix the diagnosis at its best.

Wish her best health.
Regards.
