My Right Nostril Has Been Quite Difficult To Breathe Through

default
Posted on Tue, 26 May 2020
Question: My right nostril has been quite difficult to breathe through for a long time especially at night. A month or so ago I started with nosebleeds from my left nostril which are really short and quick but come on sudden, usually after getting up from laying down especially in a morning, or when moving around. It is reccurent and every morning when I stand off my bed it happens. some mornings I can have like 6 or so of these short bleeds, it's litterally only about 5 drips. When I wake up I can feel the blood dried up my nose an in the back of my throat. I looked up my right nostril as I was curious if I could see what the congestion was and I really don't know how to describe it but it's like my septum on the right side is bright red an inflamed to the point my nostril is shut, only on the inside right at the top, the bottom of my nostril is open. I am unsure if this is some sort of growth, I have no pain in my nose however I have been having alot of strong headaches and migraines and have quite large swollen lymph nodes especially in my neck (these have been there a long time) and behind my right ear this one is a little larger than normal but again no pain at all. I am just wondering if you have any idea what this could be as it's getting quite annoying. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Rhinitis or nasal polyps are possibilities.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
It could be rhinitis or inflammation of the mucosa of the nasal cavity. Other possible causes like nasal polyps( a kind of of benign growth in the nasal cavity) has to be ruled out. If you have DNS( deviated nasal septum), there is chance for recurrent infection and rhinitis, sometime inflamed septum itself can impart a red colour to it.
As of now you can try over the counter available nasal decongestant drops to relieve nasal blocks. Do steam inhalation also. Over the counter available antihistamines like levocetrizine can provide symptomatic relief.
However a detailed examination is required to confirm the diagnosis, You can consult an ENT specialist for further evaluation. A detailed nostril examination can easily rule out any mass.
The lymph nodes may be due to recurrent infections.
Hope I have answered your query.
thanks

Hi thank you for your reply it has been very useful. Would the problems you suggest cause bleeding from the opposite nostril? I was involved in a car accident about 7years ago where I thought I had broken my nose and have had difficulty breathing through the right nostril since then it is just since the bleeding in the left nostril, it has been more difficult to breathe through the right one, I seem to be waking up during the night 'mouth breathing'. Thank you for your time.

Brief Answer:
It is possible.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Rhinitis or inflammation is a generalised condition and affect both the nose.
May be you are having two different conditions leads to two different symptoms.
The trauma you had in the past might have disturbed the structural anatomy of nose.
Hope I have answered your query.
Thanks
