My Mother Is An Hemodialysis Patient. After Her Dialysis Treatment

default
Posted on Tue, 3 Dec 2019
Question: My mother is an hemodialysis patient. After her dialysis treatment today, she is presenting swelling on one side of her upper lip, one of her feet, and 'the place where babies exit'. She has high blood pressure problems, which led to her kidney failure. Are these symptoms to be expected sometimes, or is it a major cause for concern?

Brief Answer:
SWELLING IN HAEMODIALYSIS PATIENT

Detailed Answer:
Hi...
Welcome to the "Ask a Doctor" service.
I am Dr. Ajeet XXXXXXX

I have gone through your query and here is my opinion.

The most common causes of such swellings in patients who are on long term hemodialysis are....

1. Fluid overload - Water and fluid intake of the patient should be restricted and excess body water should be removed in the next dialysis session to procure a negative balance.

2. Allergic reaction to dialyzer solution -In such cases, the dialyzer is changed and the patient is given antihistaminics and steroids.

3. Superior vena cava syndrome -Here blood clot is formed in large veins of the body thus causing obstruction.
This condition is diagnosed by CT Venography and treated with blood thinners and stent placement.

She needs further evaluation.
Her nephrologist will guide you regarding the management strategies according to the cause.

Hope that I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards
