My Hair Keeps Breaking, Despite Taking Perfect Care Of It

Question: My hair keeps breaking, despite taking perfect care of it and not damaging it. I have a very long list of things I do right. But the problem is that no matter what I do, breakage can't be prevented. It used to be to my waist for a few years, but now it's been mostly around my mid-back and I didn't cut it. I do keep up with trims every few weeks. But the breakage still happens, especially overnight. I wear a silk cap and have for years. The styles I've been doing recently are one or two braids at night. I can't do buns anymore since that causes breakage easily. When I do a Google search, I don't get any helpful results. A lot of them target black women's hair, but I'm south Asian (Indian) with fine hair. I've wrapped my hair at night before with gentler pins, and that also failed. What is a good style for fine hair at night that prevents breakage? Also, I am 26, so I'm not that old. If you suggest something to do that's good for hair and prevents breakage, I've already done that. If you suggest avoiding things that damage hair, like dying, I never do that.

Brief Answer:
Regarding hair fall

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to ask a doctor service. I have gone through your query and noted your concern.

There could be various reasons for increased in hair shedding like nutritional, hormonal, genetic, however, a large number of cases are idiopathic i.e with no identifiable cause. Mostly, chronic hair shedding can be put into 2 main categories in females - Chronic Telogen effluvium (CTE) and Female pattern hair loss (FPHL). Diagnosis is on history and clinical examination...You seem to have either CTE or both CTEand FPHL I suggest you to take a few blood tests like complete blood counts, serum Ferritin, Thyroid function tests since iron deficiency and thyroid hormone abnormalities are the 2 most common causes of increased shedding in females with Chronic Telogen effluvium. As far as style to tie hair at night is concerned, I don't think that is the real reason for increased hair shedding. You may either fold them loosely or hold them with the help of pins at night.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you need any more assistance.
