My Father Is 90 Years Old And Fell Some 3

Question: My father is 90 years old and fell some 3 weeks ago. He had heavy bruising on his face which hasnt healed and was diagnosed with an internal bleed. The hospital doesn't want to operate on the hematoma because of his frailty and i learned this morning that the anti-coagulant that had previously been prescribed has been stopped. I called his GP who advises that this will reduce the internal bleeding to a minimal amount (considering he also takes aspirin) but with the risk of a blood clot forming. I guess the anti-coagulant may impede the natural recovery and healing of the hematoma and why it has been stopped but then the GP stated that it would be best if the family was to visit because my father will have a limited time left. I cant reconcile why the anti-coagulant has been stopped with the statement that he has a limited time left because surely if the risk is too high then why not continue with the anti-coagulant. Also why could they not wait until he recovers physically from the fall and is able to sustain surgery to remove the hematoma. So these are my questions and feel free to elaborate your answers so that i can have more understanding of what is going on. Thanks

Brief Answer:
About hematoma and anticoagulation therapy;

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking!
i have gone carefully through your concern regarding to your father's health.
As you may know hematoma means bleeding and in a patient taking anticiagulation treatment the hemorrhage has a risk of reoccuring (as the formation of clots that prevents the hemorrhage is prevented).
The studies shows that anticoagulation is better to be restarted within the first month after the hemorrhage and the team in charge decides depending on the velocity of hemorrhage shrink, on the comorbidity of the patient, the risk for thrombosis ect.
So, it is their decision but usually within a month it is restarted.
Hope the information will help.
Best wishes,
Dr.Mirjeta
