Brief Answer:
Prognosis of multinodular goiter and relation with thyroid cancer

Detailed Answer:
Hi....
Welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX

I have gone through your query/report and here is my opinion.

The Ultrasound report of neck is suggestive of Multi nodular goiter(MNG).
Kindly share the T3,T4,TSH and TPO Antibodies report (if they have been procured)

Multi nodular goiters are usually uncomplicated and are not life threatening.
Many patients are diagnosed incidentally.
Most patients need no treatment,if thyroid functions are normal.

If symptomatic, they are usually managed by radioactive iodine, medication (including levothyroxine) or surgery.

Most common and initial treatment is radio iodine therapy which reduces the gland size in 2 to 6 months (at times, may take longer) and restores normal thyroid functions.

If patient has large sized goiter with compression symptoms, causing difficulty in swallowing and breathing, has cosmetic issues (specially in adolescents) or psychological embarrassment,a doctor advises for removal of thyroid. In such cases, patient needs to take thyroid extract supplements through out the life.

In a nutshell, most patients with MNG can lead a normal life for many years, without any complications but they should be monitored by periodic clinical examination, biopsy and fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) to detect a possible malignant transformation.

As per medical studies and research, the risk of thyroid cancer in patients with multiple nodules is high.Every 10 to 20 % of MNG patients might get thyroid cancer.
Though the studies are still on to correlate the two but present data is enough to validate that the risk of thyroid cancer is increased in patients with MNG.
They need a lifelong surveillance.

Patient should always be alert to detect a sudden change in size, consistency and newly generated pain.

Hope that I have answered your query.

Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards.
