Is There Any Hope Of A Heartbeat A Little After 7th Week If The Doctor Diagnoses The Pregnancy As A Missed Abortion?

default
Posted on Thu, 24 Jan 2019
Question: I am currently in my 7th week of pregnancy (my last period date was on 9th Jan). We had an ultra sound scan today (3rd March). Doctor told us that the baby's body has formed but she could not find the heart. After reviewing my reports and scan result, she informed us that the baby's heartbeat has stopped, she also told that it looks like it might have just stopped today morning or yesterday night.
I would like to know if we can wait for 1 or 2 weeks to see if the heart beat is revived? Is it too early to conclude that the heart beat is stopped or can we wait for a week? Is there any chance that the heartbeat can be seen in future (may be in another 1 or 2 weeks)?

Brief Answer:
This is a missed abortion.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

If the previous early scan showed that there was a heart beat and now it has stopped then this is a missed abortion and there are no chances of the heart reviving back again.

You may have to consider suction and evacuation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Many thanks for your reply. However, this is my first scan. I do not have any previous scan to show that the heart is formed. My doctor told me by looking at the first scan that the heartbeat has stopped. Can we wait for one more week to see if heart beat is there? or is this definitely a miscarriage?

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

If this is the first scan and you are at 7 weeks from last menstrual date, even then, if the baby's body has formed or CRL is present but without heartbeat then it is a missed abortion and there is no point waiting for a heartbeat. If the CRL (crown rump length) were absent then you could have waited for 2 more weeks.

Please attach your ultrasound report for purview.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Brief Answer:
Missed abortion

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

After reviewing the report, it is clear that it is a missed abortion as CRL is 94 mm and if CRL is evident then the heartbeat was once present and has now stopped. There is no chance of the revival of the heartbeat in this case.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dear sir,
Many thanks for your reply. We had a second scan today which confirmed there is no heartbeat of the foetus. Our doctor suggested terminating this pregnancy as early as possible to avoid further complications. She informed us of two methods: one is with vaginal tablet and the other is by suction. Please suggest which method is the safest for me and will help me for quicker recovery to get pregnant again. Are there any side effects in either of these methods?
Thank you in advance.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

If this is your first pregnancy then I would suggest to opt for a medical termination with drugs which can be completely achieved in 3-5 days.

Suction and evacuation is a surgical procedure under local anesthesia where the sac is removed. I would suggest to opt for the medical procedure.

Next pregnancy should be planned only 3 months after the termination of the pregnancy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Your RUBELLA and Homocysteine levels are high which qualifies you as TORCH positive and hyperhomocysteinemic.

Rubella IgM levels are also important to rule out any active disease which shall decide your present immunity status. There is no cure for rubella infection at present and it is a self limiting infection, so pregnancy in rubella IgM positive cases need termination or do not grow at all (natural selection / missed abortion). IgG indicates previously acquired immunity and this would not affect your pregnancy.

Homocysteine levels are to be brought down with vitamin B12 injections as high levels can cause thromboembolic episodes and cause decrease blood flow and can be considered a cause for potential recurrent miscarriages or missed abortions.

Hope I have answered your query.
