Is Recurring Cellulitis Curable?

default
Posted on Wed, 7 Jan 2015
Question: My sister is a psychiatric patient at a long term care facility. She has also recurring cellulitis and has had it for more than four years. It is so bad that her feet are deformed permanently, fallen arches, extreme pronation of ankles and toes are curled and turned to one side outward. She can barely walk, is not wearing edema shoes or boots. Tries to walk with a rolling walker. Is this curabe, has she been mistreated and what can be done now?

Brief Answer:
Dressing and serial corrective cast may help.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your query.

I'm Dr. Sudhir Kumar,

After going through your query I concluded that your sister is having recurrent cellulitis. Cause of it can be her decreased immunity and unhygienic condition and her psychiatric illness. Her cellulitis can be cured by giving antibiotics according to culture and sensitivity of pus/ fluid. Whether she still has ulcer and wounds. If she still has open wound then these can be cured by regular aseptic dressing at regular intervals.

Her foot deformity can be gradually corrected by applying serial corrective casts. I will need x ray of her feet to further assess the condition of bones , whether there is infection in bone and severity of deformity. If you can upload the her feet photograph and x rays I can better help you.

Hope I have answered your query.
If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
