Is Mild Intermittent Left Chest, Shoulder And Hand Pain A Serious Concern?

Posted on Mon, 1 Apr 2024
Question: Hi Doc,

From past two months i have having this mild left chest pain(on and off)- Sometimes feels like gas pain and sometimes like muscle pain.

With chest, the pain starts from my left neck, back left shoulder blade shoulder and goes down till my hand and fingers. Sometimes its tingling or numb feeling in the hands, specially in the morning.

Back shoulder blade, and hand pain increases while resting or sleeping and no pain during regular activities.

Also, when i sleep on my chest down, it hurts and feels heaviness.(Doc said may be due to inflammation).

Please advise, this is giving me serious anxiety problems. Doctors said, it must be some muscle spasm which would heal down but its been two months and no relief. infant the pain in the left arm increased now.

Chest pain is not all the time but on and off now.

Brief Answer:
please do not worry.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Thanks for the question. I went through your description. Whenever you go to a doctor with chest pain, which is felt at chest, shoulder, arm joint, arm etc doctor should investigate with personal check up incuding BP, pulse and heart rhythm and your history. Ther usually an ECG is taken to know your heart functioning. Sometimes stress test or echo test could also be advised. Have you gone through these check ups? Are you cleared of any heart conditions?

If yes, inflammation, general muscle pain, acidity etc are other reasons for which your doctor must have given medicines.

Another aspect is anxiety. Being worried about the situation and health can trigger your body's anxiety response system. Acidity, gastric reflex can result and can lead to the chest pain.

Excess anxiety can lead to even psychogenic pain.

If the answer to my question is YES, then I can help you with psychological treatment. If it is NO consult a physican once again.

Thanks for the reply Doc. Really appreciate it.

Yes, i have gone through series of tests to rule out issues with heart.

BP - Normal
ECG - Negative but when ever i go for ECG, my heart rate is always high like 90 pm.
TMT - Positive
Echo - Normal
CT Angiogram - Negative

The Doc said, its nothing with the heart but might be muscle spasm. Also said to take a MRI for C-Spine to see if any nerve pinch is causing this symptoms.

Yes. I definitely have anxiety issues due to my on going health condition. I am usually thinking about my health and reading on google adds up to the anxiety.

I am trying to control my mind but doesn't help much. Due to the pain, i stooped my workout and yoga sessions as well.

Let me know how to go about?

Brief Answer:
Please go for counseling and CBT

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Thanks for the follow up
As every tests related to your heart health is perfect, you should stop worrying about it and stop googling about the symptoms. You should trust your doctor.

You may take the other tests suggested by the doctor because the simple mention about other problems in the chest triggers psychogenic pain. To keep your unconscious mind at rest, you should confirm it by taking other tests. Once the other tests are taken, automatically your mind should calm down and the pain should subside.

Because the pain is never related to your heart, you should find time to meditate, do yoga asanas according to the training provided to you. I would suggest thorough face to face or video counseling and other Cognitive Behavior therapy to you. Counseling has to be done either through face to face, through telephone or video chat. This medium is not good for counseling.

You may consult a psychologist in person or I can provide the treatment through the mediums I mentioned.

Take care
