I probably wouldn't have done that. He probably does masturbate, as teenage boys overwhelmingly do. Asking him likely embarrassed him. And his birthday is an odd time to bring up that subject -- it's a celebration, not a time to discuss sexual matters. I would probably apologize to him to make him feel better.
