Question: I have a hip labral tear that showed on an MRI. I received a cortisone shot that gave me no relief from the hip symptoms I was having. My Ortho Dr. then sent me to a general surgeon because he suspected a sports hernia and got no relief from the cortisone shot. I had an ultrasound done which showed a sport hernia. I have surgery the 20th of next month. Is it possible that the sports hernia was causing the hip pain and not the labral tear even though the labral tear showed up on the MRI.

Hi,

A sports hernia typically causes a pain in the groin area and less pain in the hip. IF your pain was mostly restricted to the groin area and changed with position even if you are lying down then it was more likely to be due to a sports hernia. A hip labral tear is painful but more pain is felt when you bear weight on the legs or do stressful activities like jumping or climbing stairs. Your pain is likely to subside after the surgery.
