Is Homocysteine Level Of 34.5 A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Sat, 22 Aug 2015
Question: Hello doc. My homocystine is 34.5. I am taking telma 20, kombiglyze 5/100 , roseday 5 , and my doc has advised to take centrum tablet and folinext. I was taking ursocol 300 for fatty liver for 3 months but now as reports are normal doc has advised to stop it. My age is 39. Is my homocystine is too high? Is it highly risky in near future? Folinext and centrum are enough to reduce it?

Brief Answer:
No additional risk, be reassured

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir, I am Dr Mody and I would be addressing your concern.
I would go brief and to the point for the same.
Is your homocysteine level high, yes anything above 15 is high and ideally we should bring it to 10-12 range.
Do you need to worry? My answer is NO, though individual studies did find correlation with stroke and heart problem, no meta analysis(these are larger studies) proved no decrease in heart issues after bringing it to normal, also 2015 XXXXXXX college of cardiology guidelines recommend NO benefit with treatment.
Still should you take it? YES,
Why I an contradicting myself? The treatment of same as you said the above mentioned medication is vitamin b1,6 and B12 and folic acid. So all of these are multivitamin, so there is no harm in taking it, though whether there is any benefit of clinical relevance is unknown.

So for whom is homocysteine done ? Generally who had young stroke or heart attack.
It was seen that genetically who had high homocysteine ( however here it was always more than 100), so they were more prone to such events.

So considering you have other risk factors, treating it as well is justified, whatever it is worth.

Apart from the multivitamin there is no other treatment, so folinaxt and centrum would be good, alternative tab homochek twice a day and However low methionine diet, that is red meat, egg white, cheese, , sesame which will help decrease the levels.
Hoping I could help.
Any further information feel free to ask.

Brief Answer:
No need to add homocheck

Detailed Answer:
Hello, homocheck specifically contains elements for decreasing homocysteine,
Now folinext has folic acid and b12, and Centrum has multiple vitamin and mineral, so they both cover homocheck content.
However if you have gastritis with centrum you may change to homocheck alone.
Lastly homocysteine is the new health fad, so it would need done by most of the doctors and XXXXXXX check ups, though still it's significance is not validated throughout the world. So you take, it might help , and of you don't no problem.
Take care.
Any other question, feel free to ask
