Is Decreased Kidney Function In Old Age A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Oct 2014
Question: I am a 60 year old male with a history of heart block, pacemaker. No history of renal issues. I recently had labs done twice within about 2 weeks. Regarding the kidneys, the first labs showed BUN 22, Creat 1.0, BUN/Creat ratio 22.0, GFR-NAA 81.4, GFR-AA 94.2. Second set of labs showed BUN 20, Creat 1.1, BUN/Creat ratio 19.0, GFR-NAA 72.6, GFR-AA 83.9. My doctor said that I have decreased kidney function probably related to age. Should I be concerned?

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for sending the question.

I agree that your doctors assessment is correct. You have a very slight limitation of kidney function which is consistent with your age. Do not function the same as those of the 21-year-old which is very common.

I would not be concerned that this is at all life-threatening. Your doctors will slowly mom to your kidney function overtime by checking bloodwork every 6 to 12 months.

General advice for someone in your age bracket would be to continue a very healthy lifestyle was good exercise as well as excellent diet and good hydration on a daily basis. Try to maintain a good way to keep your blood pressure under control and he will contain long and healthy life. Thanks again for sharing your health care concern with us.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
