Question: In the case of a brain stem tumor being detected or other tumors where surgery isn't possible. How to know what kind of tumor it is and the malignancy etc if a biopsy is not possible? And are gamma knife and cyber knife treatments with good enough outcomes in this case?

Brief Answer:
Craniotomy and tumor excision needs to be done

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

In cases of brain tumors, it is important to establish the diagnosis by biopsy or tumor excision by surgery (craniotomy).

Tumor excision also helps in local tumor control. After that, radiation and chemotherapy are needed. If biopsy or tumor excision is somehow not possible, then only radiation can be given.

Cyber knife or gamma knife are types of radiation therapies. Outcome with radiation only will be sub-optimal as no surgery or chemo can be offered.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.

Surgery was deemed to be too dangerous due to its proximity to the spinal cord. Based on MRI, tumor is believed to be a grade II astrocytoma located originating in the pons. Is it true that this kind will almost always develop into grade 3 and is complete remission possible?

Brief Answer:
Yes, they may develop to a higher grade

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Yes, there is always a possibility of developing into a higher grade lesion. As I said earlier, without surgery, radiation therapy will offer little help and complete remission is not possible.

Hope I have answered your query.

Thank you.
