Question: If a chipped elbow with ligament damage goes untreated, such as surgery or long term cast, what are the consequences? I wear a compression sleeve. I am supposed to see an orthopedic doctor next week for options. I just really need to know if i can do more and permanent damage if I don't get this treated, Even if it was treated I still have to be at work and use my arm, hand.

Brief Answer:
It may lead to longer recovering time.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.
The consequences of leaving untreated an elbow fracture may vary depending on the characterisrics and topology of the fracture like how much pieces are there , distance of dislocated etc. You should have been keeping the sling as recommended by your doctor.
Leaving it untreated may lead to longer recovering time, impaired movement or difficulties on performing everyday activities.

Hope I have answered the question.

I keep it in the sling for work. Does wearing the compression sleeve help? Aside from longer recovery time, can it do permanent damage? Will there be decay in that area? Can the ligament freeze up? Will the swelling in the hand and blood pooling do damage? I ice the hand to reduce swelling but blood seems to pool. Thanks

Brief Answer:
See detailed answer below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and thank you for asking again. Wearing a compression sleeve may help but you better imobilise it .
It can lead to longer recovering time or even nonunion fracture.
The other possible complications need a further detailed evaluation. It can lead to nerve damage , stiffness of the elbow, improper bone growth, arthritis.
This is likely to cause impaired movement, difficulty to flex and extend it and inability to perform everyday activities.
If the wound is closed I don't think there can be a decay.
The pooling blood or haematoma can be absorbed gradually and swelling will go down gradually.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
