Suggest Treatment For Shoulder Pain, Mainly Due To Tight Muscles, Rushing Sound In The Left Ear, Dizziness And Left Arm Numbness

Question: I worked at DGeneral for a while and did a lot of heavy lifting over my head. I have developed shoulder pain, mainly due to tight mucsles, but I also am experiencing a rushing sound usually by my left ear, but sometimes it seems to be across the back of my neck. There is also a lot of pressure on my ears, eyes and head. When I bend over the rushing gets louder. When I looked up my neck cracks in the middle and it is uncomfortable. I have some dizziness at times and a little bit of numbness in my left arm. The chiropractor says I have a buldging disc. Her care only helps a little temporarily. The DR. I saw wants me to do a carotid artery test, but I don't think that's my trouble.

Brief Answer:
Though less likely but still testing for carotid artery is advised.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

You are very right, the symptoms you said looks to be related to your neck. These symptoms can be related to the compression of the nerves in the neck which may be single disc prolapse but more commonly by cervical spondylosis.

But in spite of all of this getting being tested for carotid artery problems like narrowing in the vessel (stenosis, or subclavian steal syndrome) is not a bad idea. Though it looks more to be because of the neck problem but we cannot say for sure that it cannot be carotid problem. Specially if there is dizziness, or numbness in the left hand and hissing in ears we always would like to get tested for carotid artery problem.

Mostly that's done through CT or MR angiography which are not invasive tests and mostly don't cause any trouble so my personal advice would be to get the tests for carotid artery done. There is little harm, if any , in testing it.
I personally would also like to get an MRI of the spine done ( to be sure if there is any disc problem ), and an ENT specialist to see into your ears as some times problem in the ears ( like wax ) can cause similar symptoms.

Once we know exactly what is the cause and are sure about it that there is nothing wrong with the artery, or the ears, we can always make plan to treat disk problems.

Hopes this is clear now, please do ask if you have any further question in mind. I would be glad to answer you.

Regards,
Dr. Rahman
