How Should I Do About Hard And Red Dog Bite Site Despite Taking Treatment?

default
Posted on Fri, 1 Jul 2022
Question: I was bitten pretty severely by a dog 12 days ago. I went to the ER and they cleaned it and put me on augmentin. 875MG. I finished them today. The site is still red and hard an a urgent care doctor told me to keep hot compress on it as it appeared I had a superficial hematoma. That was this Monday. It seems to soften after all day of compresses but hardens at night. The red area has not increased it remains the same as it was since last week. However it is still relatively hard. Also I don't know if it is the augmentin or changes in weather because I have had a slight, very slight headache since yesterday. Is there anything else I can do for my leg (bite site), is it serious to go to the ER or wait a bit longer.

Brief Answer:
You can wait for the time being

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I've reviewed the images. This is the hematoma which is commonly seen along with bite wound since dog teeth usually perforate small vessels under the skin. This should pull back within 3-4 weeks.

As I can see there are no signs of some infection or complicated healing and I don't think that further antibiotic therapy is required. You should apply a cold compress, take nonsteroid painkillers like Tylenol and apply antibiotic ointments such as Mupirocin on the open wound and heparin gel on hematoma.

Feel free to ask further. Wish you good health.
Regards
