I Thought I Had A Normal Injury To My Thigh

default
Posted on Sun, 14 Apr 2019
Question: I thought I had a normal injury to my thigh muscle, but after one week I have some improvement, but not as much as I would like. After looking at my injury my husband did some research and after looking at some pictures, it definitely looks like I injured my hamstring. I have googled for treatment options, but my question is, is physical therapy considered a standard of care for hamstring injuries. I prefer not to go for physical therapy but if it is my best option I will do it.

Brief Answer:
Rest is needed for healing.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
After an injury to the hamstrings, you need to give rest to the muscle to heal. You can use a compression bandage and keep the leg elevated on two pillows while resting so that the swelling reduces. Oral anti inflammatory pain killers are also needed to take care of the inflammation.
After the pain and swelling subsides then physical therapy is recommended so as to regain the strength and flexibility of the muscle. In case the injury is associated with a large hematoma then surgical drainage of hematoma may be needed so as to allow the muscle to heal.
I hope this answers your query.

Thank you Dr. for your answer. I neglected to say that this hamstring injury is as a result of a fall, almost one week ago. My question is is being examined by a doctor usually necessary for this type of injury. I would classify this injury as moderate not severe. I can easily walk on the leg with only some mild pain. But I still have quite a bit of swelling. I was getting better everyday then yesterday I walked my strong dog which was a very big mistake because it aggravated it. I iced it several times today and tonight I am feeling a little bit better.

Brief Answer:
Rest will heal it.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
If you are sure regarding the diagnosis then you can avoid a visit to doctor as it takes time to heal. If you can walk normally then any major ligament or tendon injury is not likely. Allow it to rest completely so that it heals well. It usually takes 4-6 weeks for proper healing.
Hope my answer is helpful.
