Question: I take 60mg of Adderall a day for depression. I know Adderall isn’t prescribed for depression but I tried so many antidepressants and they didn’t seem to work for me. I don’t have bipolar. I have MDD. The only thing I remember helping once was Prozac. Anyway I want to get off it slowly. I can’t fin d a website that tells you how to slowly cut down on it. My dr precscribes it like its candy. I just don’t want to take it anymore. Can you tell me how I should do this?

Brief Answer:
Gradual dose reduction should be done

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for using ask a doctor service

I can understand your concern. Adderall is an amphetamine drug and if the drug is stopped abruptly after regular use then there is risk of withdrawal symptoms. This is the reason the drug should be reduced gradually over 6-8 weeks.

The dose should be reduced to 45 mg (30+15) and should be continued for 2-3 weeks and then the dose should be reduced again to 30 mg for next two weeks and then to 15 mg for next 2 weeks followed by taking the drug on alternate days for a couple of weeks and then you can stop the drug.

Such gradual dose reduction will prevent any risk of withdrawal symptoms. You can talk with your doctor for this.

Brief Answer:
The dose should be reduced by 15 mg every two weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again

No once you are on 45 mg dose for around 18 days then reduce the dose to 30 mg to be taken for next 2 weeks, followed by further reduction to 15 mg per day for two more weeks and then 15 mg every alternate day.

Its just like that, roughly at every two week interval you should reduce the dose by 15 mg.

Thanks.

Still not cleared please ask again.

Hi Dr. Bishnoi,
I just need to make sure I understand you properly. I was taking 60 mg every morning until today. Today I took 45 which was exactly what you said 1 and 1/2. I broke 1 in half as they are the orange (immediate release kind). Now I see you said to continue 45 mg for 2 or 3 weeks. Let’s say I do the 45 mg’s for 2 1/2 weeks or approximately 18 days. Here’s my question: Do you want me to decrease the 45mg’s to 15 mg’s for another 18 days? Then every other day take a 15mg pill? Then stop?

Thank you for getting back to me. I appreciate this.
Always,
