Question: I started experiencing pain on my left wrist/hand last night. The vein on the wrist area is puffed up and also a vein on my hand somewhat. Mostly the one on my wrist area on top by top of my hand, I am 81 years old and have not hit or injured the area. It ached keeping me awake last night. Put ice on it an hour ago so will see if that does anything. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thank You.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
There are many possible causes to your symptoms.
Before I discus them with your , I should tell you that I am assuming you have had no pain till the onset of this pain yesterday in that location.

Now first possibility is arthritis. This could have many possible causes like uric acid. So if you have had a uric acid problem before, this may be an attack and you will need to test the levels of uric acid.

A second possibility is a reactive arthritis. This usually develops if you have not been keeping well and develop the symptoms of pain in the joint. This usually resolves as the trigger infection or condition settles.

Another possibility I need to consider is stasis of blood that may have resulted in the clot in one of the veins. This may also explain the dilated blood vessels that you see. This will need a Doppler study.

I would really recommend going to the hospital and getting the tests if the Ice is not helping. You can also take some paracetamol for pain while you wait to get to the hospital. This will afford you some pain relief.

Thanks.
