I Missed My Brith Control 2 Days In A Row

default
Posted on Sun, 11 Aug 2019
Question: I missed my brith control 2 days in a row staring on Saturday through Sunday, but picked it up again on Monday. At that point, I was already having an early period, which I knew was to be expected. I already spoke to my doctor, and I knew the effects wouldn't come back until 7 days later. The bleeding stopped on Thursday, and on that Friday, I had protected sex. However the condom broke. We didn't notice, as we're fairly new to sex. I took the morning after pill the next day, but I'm still afraid I'm pregnant. I'm still in college, my family situation isn't great, and I have no idea what to do. How likely is it that I'm pregnant?

Brief Answer:
The morning after pill offers a protection rate of 95% if taken within 24 hours, thus you have a risk of around 5% to be pregnant

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,

I carefully read your query and understand your concern with pregnancy.

As you were advised, if you miss two birth control pills in a row, the pill does not offer protection the following week and abstinence or use of condoms is recommended.
Condoms have a protection rate of 98% (if used the right way every time). The other 2% count for malfunctions as it has happened in your case.

On the other hand, the morning after pill, if taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse, prevents pregnancy in 89% of the cases. This number goes up to 95% if taken within 24 hours of unprotected intercourse. Thus in your case, it is a chance of around 5% to be pregnant.

If you do not get a period on the due date, this may as well be due to irregularities the morning after pill is causing, but it is best to have a pregnancy test to make sure you are not pregnant.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

I wish you good health.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj,
