Question: I have had heart palpitations for years and had them checked out by a doctor and they say they are benign. Lately every now and then I have had symptoms where after waking up in the middle of the night to pee after walking to the bathroom and sitting down the toilet my heart begins to pound really hard for about 1 minute so loud I can hear it in my ears then it goes away this doesn’t happen every night though . What may be causing this ?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome to Ask a Doctor service!

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that your symptoms are suggestive of possible orthostatic hypotension or postural tachycardia.

For this reason, I would recommend consulting with your attending physician for a physical exam and some tests:

- complete blood count for anemia
- blood electrolytes for possible imbalances
- thyroid hormone levels for possible thyroid gland dysfunction.

A head up Tilt test would help investigate for possible orthostatic intolerance.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

I remain at your disposal for any further questions whenever you need!
