Posted on Mon, 15 Apr 2019
Question: I have had an episode of swelling under the jaw line along with fever and runny nose. The swelling was painful and was red. I took antibiotic and the pain became numb. The whole thing lasted for 5-6 days.I had protected sexual intercourse with a woman 4-6 weeks before. I am worried if it is HIV infection.

Brief Answer:
HIV unlikely

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

your case sounds a lot like a viral infection. Fever, runny nose and swollen lymph nodes are common. The HIV primary infection may also present with fever and swollen lymph nodes but other the duration is usually longer and the nose is not involved. Besides that if you remained protected at all times, the sexual intercourse is not supposed to cause transmission of HIV.

If you'd like to be sure you can ask your doctor for HIV testing now and repeat testing after some time (which depends on the choice of test).

I hope I've answered your question. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Kind Regards,

Thanks a lot Doctor. When I finished intercourse I found that blood was smeared all over my condom. Also I ejaculated inside the condom. Is this something to worry about. I did not had any noticeable blood stains on my penis.

Brief Answer:
if the condom was intact then you're OK

Detailed Answer:
You're welcome!

What matters is whether you had blood to mucosa contact or not. If the blood entered the condom (because the condom broke or because the blood was too much and some blood slipped through the opening of the condom) then you may have been exposed to infectious fluids. If there was no blood to blood, blood to mucosa or mucosa to mucosa contact then you have nothing to worry about.
