Why Do I Have Pain At The Anterior Superior Iliac Spine Where Hernia Repair Was Done Seven Years Ago?

Question: I am having pain on my left side. It is generally in the area immediately to the inside of my left hip bone (anterior superior iliac spine). I had a hernia repaired in that area 7 years ago and worried that it could be that. When sitting I get a moderate sharp twinge and when I stretch in that area it is painful. It does not hurt to lift weights or strain though.
What else could it be? Could their be something going on in my colon? When I push on it I find it mildly painful too.

Brief Answer:
Few possible issues

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Yes, it may be related to previous hernia surgery especially if the mesh was placed, as sometimes internal stitches may inflame or small hernia recurrence may occur. Some abdominal nerves cross this area as well and these may be irritated my mesh or injury.

Second, if this is not abdominal wall problem then intrabdominal problems such as diverticulosis may be present. I suggest to take painkillers and rest and have easier diet. If it persists then ultrasound and colonoscopy should be done.

Wish you good health.

Regards
