Question: I am a grandmother with cold sores. They started on Tuesday so I took a Valtrex. When I woke up on Wednesday, they were blisters so I took another Valtrex and started using Abreva. I am visiting my 5 week old granddaughters (twins) and have handled both of them. I haven't kissed them, but my daughter is very concerned. The sores are dried out today.

Herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) infection on the lips or around the mouth is usually transmitted through direct skin to skin contact e.g kissing a child near the lip area.

Sharing drinking glasses or drinking through the same straw are possible routes but very rare, provided there is infectious saliva or infectious fluid from the sore that comes in direct contact with the lips or mouth. Simple handling does not pose a risk of transmission of type - herpes simplex virus infection.
