Question: I am a 29 y/o male - work at FedEx. On 2/7/19, while bending down I felt a sharp piercing pain in my right upper abdomen with a bulge the size of my fist. I was able to push it back in. Happened a second time 5 minutes later. Went to local clinic, doctor diagnosed an unspecified hernia, told me to take a week off from work. Still in pain, returned to work. In March had ultrasound that did not show any abnormalities. On 3/29 it happened again - this time went to ER -again diagnosed with a hernia. Saw a surgeon (breast surgeon) that worker's comp picked out. Had a CT that also came back negative. Still have pain, now diagnosed with a strained abdominal muscle. Would/could a strained muscle pop out of my abdomen? Wouldn't this be considered a hernia? Thank you for your help.

Brief Answer:
It seems to be Hernia

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
As per your description, it looks like Hernia.

Swelling which is coming out and going in after exerting pressure goes more in favor of Hernia.
It cannot be a strained muscle.

The hernia can occur in any part of the abdomen where the muscles get weak. In your case, muscles of the Abdominal wall in that area are weak, giving scope for the abdominal contents to come out and produce a bulge. Usually, it occurs when there is raised intraabdominal pressure like coughing, lifting weights, etc.

As CT Scan and Ultrasound are done in lying down posture(Supine), the contents of the Hernia will go to their normal position inside the Abdomen and Hernia is not visible. So, they came normal.

Please consult your Surgeon and proceed further. Surgery is the only option for Hernia. Ideally, it's advisable to get it done as early as possible.

Nothing to worry.
Hope I answered your query. If you have any questions, I will clarify further.

Wish you good health
