Question: I am 86 years old, healthy other than old age. I take Bisoprolol 5mg for Atrial Fib which controls it 90% of time, Amlodipine was added about two years ago for Hypertension which is seldom and diastolic usually only elevated occasionally when I eat salt! I am having some side effects that are suspicious for Amlodipine. I was taking 5mg of it and my doctor lowered to 2.5 mg some time ago. Do I really need both meds?

Brief Answer:
Very low dose of amlodipine. Keep low salt diet

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

In order to judge it right I may need the exact values that your blood pressure reatches.
We use bisoprolol and amlodipine in initial phase of blood pressure and I guess that your blood pressure is well stabilised with both of them since you find 90% of time normal values.
Amlodipine 2.5 mg is a very small dosage and if you are not experiencing side effects you better take it. Give time to your body at least two weeks to get used to it.
Try to keep a low salt diet to keep blood pressure established.

Hope I have answered the question.
