How To Treat Clubfoot Deformity?

Posted on Wed, 12 Oct 2016
Question: Hi Dr. This is a very long story, so I won't go into the who long history (yet). My son is 23 years old. He was born with bilateral club foot, released at Georgetown University Hospital at 6 months of age. Infection set in on both feet and my son lost his achilles tendon and heel pad in his left foot. He has had numerous surgeries to repair it, but the heel pad reconstruction has not been successful. He is in pain constantly. Dr. XXXXXXX Sponseller suggested amputation, but we are no where near that. I was wondering if a heel pad transplant (from me to him) is an option. If not, what about an ankle/foot transplant (also from me to him)

Brief Answer:
Foot or heel transplants

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health concerns

I am so sorry to hear about your son and his complications from club foot surgery. You are wondering if there are any transplant options for your son. There are a few leg transplant teams in the US. One program in XXXXXXX at Brigham and Women's Hospital. There is a lengthy and extensive screening process. So if you think your son maybe a candidate he will need to have a referral from his doctor and then visit XXXXXXX Once he is accepted your will need to live in the XXXXXXX area so when a donor is available he has to be in surgery within 12 hours.

Therefore if you are really considering this pathway you will need to discuss this with his current orthopedic surgeon and obtain that referral

Hi Dr. Thank you for your response, however, I was hoping to be the donor of either the tissue/heel pad or foot. Are these options? I know he would never agree to a leg transplant; I'm doubting the foot will be something he is willing to do either... I know I can convince him to take MY heelpad.

Brief Answer:
Donors

Detailed Answer:
No you can't be a donor because you need your own tissue. They would only use cadaver tissue. Sorry
