How Long Is The Healing Process After Subungual Hematoma Removal?

default
Posted on Mon, 11 Jan 2016
Question: I had a hematoma under my left thumb nail several weeks ago, and it was drained at a clinic, plus a hole was drilled in the nail for drainage. The nail fell off (nail avulsion)with some dead skin about ten days ago. It kept draining and still does a bit. I have a white patch in the middle--is this the new nail growing in? This is my main question as I am unclear about this. My wound is healing but I wanted to help heal it faster so I can resume my usual daily activities, some I cannot do without my thumb use. I wanted to use Topical Oxygen Therapy, but could not find it in my area. Will topical oxygenated water work?

Brief Answer:
It is the growing nail.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
I have seen the attached images. The white area seen in the middle is likely to be the new nail growing. The nail is likely to be normal but the surrounding skin is right now deformed due to the granulation tissue formation.
The thumb is healing well. Topical oxygen therapy will not help much. It is better to do a hot compress in the area to improve the blood circulation.
It will take time to heal. Starting using the thumb too early can cause an additional injury.
I hope this answers your query.

There is also an indentation underneath where the thumbnail was, especially slightly above the bottom cuticle area. Why is this, and can anything help it heal better, or more efficiently?

Brief Answer:
Nail beds are slow to heal.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The indentation is the healing tissue. This will all gradually disappear with time. Nail beds are always slow to heal. It is better to wait and let it heal on its own.
Hope my answer is helpful.
