Question: I have an intensive fating situation. will sleep 8 to 10 hrs, get up at about 7:30 and by 10:30 have to lay down for an hr or so. Also about 2:30 to 3:00 have to lay down again for an hr or 2. Have been to 5 family Dr.s, a urologist, sleep specialist and sleep studies, a neurologist and going to endocrinologist to day. This doctoring has been over more than 10 years and no answers. Getting tired and worn out for searching for answers. Narcolepsy has been checked. Could use some suggestions please.

Brief Answer:
This may be idiopathic hypersomnia , please see the details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I can understand the lot of stress you must be suffering from.
Once all the labs are normal , ( like thyroid, electrolytes, heamoglobin, etc) and no cause is found for excessive sleepiness , you may be suffering from a condition called 'idiopathic hypersomnia' . This is a neurological condition in which a person need to sleep for a lot of time but there is no cause found for the problem.
Unfortunately there is no cure for the disease. Though not common , but once some one suffer from the disease , it lasts for life, but good point is that it does not prove to be fatal , though the impact on life can be great. The treatment of this problem is only to use stimulant drugs like retalin and modafanil.
So yes , you should see your endocrianalogist to rule out any cause fro your problem, but if no cause is found , then you need to take the challenge, you need to avoid things that can cause excessive sleep like alcohol. Besides the stimulant drugs there are other drugs that may help these include flumazenil, clarithromycin, gabapentin however nothing is quite effective.
I understand the challenge is not an easy one but you need to take it.
I would like to have an MRI of the brain, besides the blood work to be sure not to miss any treatable cause fro your excessive sleep.

Hopes this help you understand your problem, please feel free to ask anything else about it. We are always here to help you .
Kind Regards
Dr Rahman
