default
Posted on Wed, 20 Feb 2019
Question: I went to Mexico Feb 28 had stomach pain 3/5 after eating fish and swimming in ocean and pool in an underdeveloped area of mexico. drank water from different sources . returned 3/8 to Los Angeles having constant painful stomach cramping and watery like diarrhea. No fever or blood in diarrhea. Its worse sitting or standing and helps to lay down. Tried Gatorade and oatmeal , broth, no change and still very painful , diarrhea is every 1-2 hours. no meds.

I also had ceviche (fish shrimp cooked only by lemon juice) 2-3 different times made by my nephew 30 yrs old who has had stomach cramping for weeks but no diarrhea, His doctors just gave him an antispasmotic and told him its from stress . They live in Mexico . No one else in the family is sick.

Brief Answer:

Gastroenteritis

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Seems that you have caught gastroenteritis which can be caused by a bacteria as e-coli or a Protozoa as gaurdia.

So, I would recommend that you get a stool analysis to detect the causative pathogen, then refer to your doctor for a prescription of an antibiotic as metronidazole in case of Protozoal infection or doxycycline in case of bacterial infection.

In the meanwhile, you can take Imodium every eight hours to stop diarrhea and ibuprofen tablets when needed for the pain.

You should also keep yourself hydrated with not less than eight cups of fluids daily and if you feel dehydrated then you should take an oral rehydration solution.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
