How Can Concurrent Nocturnal Hypothermia With Hyperhidrosis, With Very Low Blood Platelets Be Treated?

default
Posted on Fri, 2 Dec 2022
Question: I recently identified a condition I have had for about 5 months and rapidly getting worse. Concurrent nocturnal hypothermia with hyperhidrosis, very low blood platelets, weight loss, borderline malnutrition, weird red bumps on my legs, and severe mental problems,(memory loss, physical anxiety and tension. Through research I was able to identify the cause being: a rare, life-threatening side effect of the quetiapine I have been on for over a year. Upon stopping that drug I immediately started feeling better. Before identifying the problem, I was started on lamotrigrine. Should I taper off that to help reset my brain ?
( I have had a stable 10mm mass against my pituitary for many years, but it is not too close to the hypothalamus and the doctors don't know if that is causing any problems.)

Brief Answer:
Quetiapine can cause low platelet in rare cases.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Quetiapine is a second generation antipsychotic drug. The drug is a safe drug and in most individuals for sleep the doses of less than 100 mg are commonly used. At this dose the drug is very safe except resulting in side effects like sedation, drowsiness, weight gain, increased appetite etc. In some rare cases it can result in reduction of platelets or thrombocytopenia. I am using the drug in a lot of patients but I haven't seen this in my clinic. But yes there are few case reports which mention this as side effect of quetiapine.

But hypothermia, hyperhydrosis, weight loss etc are more related to hypothalamus function than side effect of Quetiapine in my opinion.

Qutiapine sometimes worsen anxiety and stress. By causing drowsiness it can worsen memory issues. But these side effects are seen in high doses.

You can talk with your doctor and can taper the drug.

Please don't hesitate to ask follow up doubts.

Thanks.
