How Can I Deal With Persistent UTI For Over 2 Months And Could It Be Related To CVS Nose Spray That Was Told To Be Contaminated?

Question: So there was just news that cvs nose spray could be contaminated and is now recalled in the USA. I’ve had a problem with UTIs in the last 2 months. I had one UTI in may that went away with macrobid for about 2 weeks, then came back and now I am on Cipro about to finish my last dose of medicine tomorrow. I can still feel a little bit of symptoms feeling like it didn’t completely go away. I have been using this nasal spray for years 2-3 times at night because I get congestion and can’t sleep without it. I bought this spray probably 2-3 months ago. The UTIs didn’t come on until about 2 months ago. I’ve also had strep throat in January that didn’t respond to penicillin and had to go through another round of antibiotics in February that finally went away and has been gone. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the type of outcome from this recall if my spray was contaminated. One of the symptoms is UTIs and antibiotic resistance to certain antibiotics. I’m nervous I could be effected by this spray. I have a urology appointment on the 14th. They don’t know I’ve been using this spray yet. What kind of tests should I do to be properly diagnosed and weed out the possibility of pseudomonas aeruginosa? What kind of doctor should I see? My symptoms are very mild with the antibiotics now but I’m still cautious and nervous.

Brief Answer:
You need to see urologist and do complete urine analysis and urine culture

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Your UTI could be most probably due to Pseudomas contaminating the nasal spray. You can confirm the diagnosis with Complete urine analysis and urine culture test. At this point, a urologist would be the best one to consult for your problem. Do not worry.

Although Pseudomas is resistant to few antibiotics there are still lot of anti pseudomonal antibiotic options currently. Standard regimen for drug resistant Pseudomas would be combination of beta lactam antibiotic with antipseudomonal activity like carbapenem and an aminoglycoside for a period of 7-14 days.

I would advise you to explain them about the use of CVS spray so that they can give you proper diagnosis and treatment. Also maintain proper hygiene to prevent future UTI infections. Also take proper diet and do exercise regularly to boost your immune system.

I hope I have answered your question. If you have further queries I'm happy to help you.
