Question: Hi hope everything’s good my name is Craig I suffering from severe anxiety and depression I don’t know what to do. I live a simple healthy life take one medicine Luvox 100 mg and see a psychologist 3 times week. I was suffering walking in my neighborhood but now I’m not been leaving my apartment been a week. I will give an example of the problem which follows me. I live in a high rise condominium and I want to go I need sometimes to go close to the window or even balcony. I try to but I freeze as I go forward I stop I get a severe anxiety. and feel like the next step that I will fall over the edge the balcony. Deep inside I know it’s not true but in that moment I stop I freeze I go backwards. It’s not right it’s like a catastrophic thought feeling dread comes over and I’m sick and depressed. This feeling in a nutshell is what’s happening to me it’s terrifying. it’s like I died a thousand times I feel broken and worn out can’t do this anymore can’t keep pushing myself never gets better please reply thanks Craig

Brief Answer:
A type of phobia ( acrophobia ) is causing your anxiety.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor " service.

I have read your query.

Yours is not anxiety or depression disorder, it is a condition included in phobias ( acrophobia an extreme, irrational fear of heights more exactly).

In my opinion, this type of phobia is causing your anxiety or depressive state, so, if your phobia will be treated, anxiety and depression should improve too.

Treatment of phobias including acrophobia consists in techniques such as avoidance behavior reinforced through negative reinforcement.

Other techniques include systematic desensitization, virtual reality therapy.

Drugs such as benzodiazepines and betablockers may be used temporary too.

Discuss with your Doctor for these issues.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
