Question: Hi, doctor. Went to the urologist just yesterday and blood was found in urine and I have other symptoms of a UTI. Doctor prescribed Nitrofurantoin Monoh caps - 100 mg of which I took my first (and I think my final) one last night with dinner. I have taken antib. in the past without incident but during the night, a constant dry cough woke me up, sweating, chest pain, some trouble breathing - almost went to emergency room. My question is can this med cause such effects with only having taken one and have u ever heard of this before?

Based onnthe symptoms that you had It is most likely to ber due to UTI itself and not due to Nitrofurantoin .

Get your routine urine test and urine culture done to find out the organisms causing this infection and antibiotics to which they are sensitive to.

Take broad spectrum antibiotics like Cefixime twice daily and urine alkaliser thrice daily.Later on switch on to appropriate antibiotics as per culture report. Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions,I shall be happy to help you

Get the prescription of medicines from your family Physician.

Ensure to drink more water to keep urine dilute This will help to control dysuria.
