Question: Hi doctor. I have a baby girl who was born on 23rd July 2018. she haven't gone under any vaccination at the time of birth as she was premature and was kept in NICU due to some breathing issues. Now it has been 40 days since she was born. Her weight is now 2.235 kgs. I want to know till what duration we can take her for injections which is required at the time of birth. Is it late or what. Also please suggest which injections need to be given at the time of birth and at this point of age.

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query in 'Ask A Doctor',

I have reviewed your query and can understand your concern,

Ideally all the vaccinations are perfectly safe to be given in premature or low birth wright babies. So if your baby girl was not vaccinated at the time of birth, they have to be take as soon as possible.

The normal triad of vaccinations given at birth are BCG, Hep B and Polio.

BCG- if not taken at birth, can be taken even now.
Hep B- if not taken at birth, should be taken as soon as possible. Note the date of the vaccination taken, and give a gap of 1 month till the next dose.
Polio- Should be taken within a month. Since its already been 40 days, second dose can be taken next week.

I hope this helps,

Let me know if I can assist you any further,

Regards

Hi Mam, Thanks a lot for the prompt response. we are trying to take her for the vaccination today. please confirm all three injections can be given all together or there should be any gap. Also suggest that as she haven't gone under any vaccination till now is it there any chances of something serious or is it safe if we can take her for vaccination today.

Hi again,
Thanks for replying back,

Yes, these vaccinations can be taken together in a single day. But it would be better if you could consult with a paediatrician for proper physical examination before administering the vaccinations.

As with any vaccinations or medications, there can be some side effects but which are generally rare. But there will not be any serious effects due to delay in vaccination.

I hope this helps,

Please feel free to discuss further,

Regards
