Hi, This Follows My Recent Questions. I Saw A Surgeon

Question: Hi, This follows my recent questions. I saw a surgeon today and they recommended using the patellar tendon for my case. I wanted to ask what are the detailed pros and cons of using various grafts - hamstring, cadaver and patellar as the graft. I particularly would like to know any data that suggests higher or lower re-tear rates as well as other side issues with using your own patellar tendon or hamstring tendon. Does the patellar tendon grow back? Also what is the recovery differences between each of the grafts?
Looking for detailed response. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Patellar or Hamstring tendons are a better option.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Using patellar or hamstring tendon is preferable to cadaver tendon as the acceptance of the own tissue is higher and healing is faster. The re tearing depends on the wear and tear of the knee. In case of stressful activities, any tendon can get torn.
Regarding the regrowth or the patellar tendon, only a small part- partial thickness is used and rest of the tendon helps in the repair.
The results of surgery and healing largely depend on the surgery. As there are too many factors responsible for healing and tearing there are no such specific studies available comparing the both.
Your surgeon is the best person to decide the tendon best for you after a detailed examination.
Regards.
