Question: Hi, I smoked meth for 3 years. 9 months ago I gave up and have remained clean ever since. My penis always shrunk when I was using meth which I understood to be a temporary issue. After not using the drug for 9 months my penis still hasn't returned to normal size. It is 20-30% smaller. What can I do?

Brief Answer:
Methamphetamines are not known to permanently affect penis size

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using 'Ask a Doctor'. While methamphetamines can temporarily appear to shrink the penis, as you said, because of vasoconstriction from the methamphetamine, I have not heard of it causing any permanent affect on penis size. Since the only way penis size could be affected is by blood flow, if there was a change in your penis size, it would have to be related to this, and yet I see no way that methamphetamines would cause this to be permanently affected.

There are other causes of decreased penis size, including aging, weight gain, medications (especially antidepressants), and smoking. Cholesterol build-up in the arteries to your penis might also theoretically cause a decreased penis size.

Depending on your age, I would suggest getting a medical check-up, including checking for diabetes and high cholesterol, and treating those if appropriate. Otherwise, this may be the now normal penis size for you.

Sorry I couldn't help more, please let me know if you have any other questions about any of that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
