Hi, I Have One Knee That Has Bothered Me For

Question: Hi, I have one knee that has bothered me for 50 years - playing football I was hit on the shin - after long bike rides etc. I can feel a "knot" on whatever it is on the back of the left knee that seems to connect to the calf muscle - I notice that warm water on my knee really helps - lately I started massaging that lump and it seems to go away but is back the next day. My knee is quite swollen mostly on the outside upper area. This knee gets really tight when I bend it past 90 degrees. I used to also get bad pains that radiated down onto my outside shin but with the warm water treatment that is better as well as the bending improves. I bike ride about 20 km a day. What do you recommend? Thanks XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Looks like oa

Detailed Answer:
hi
this looks like osteoarthritis.
it seems like the injury that happened has caused sone amount of degeneration in the joint.
so when you exert the knee there may be pain, swelling or stiffness.
I suggest exercising can be continued in the form of walking, biking , and quadriceps exercises.
however bending it beyond 90 degree is detrimental for the knee.
supplement for osteoarthritis like diacerin, glucosamine, and curcumin may be taken.
vitamin d levels must be maintained.
pain gel may be applied, as and when required.
an x-ray of both knees may be done in order to confirm the diagnosis.

I was walking on uneven rocky ground 3 days last week - then drove for 4 hrs - had a hot shower - put warm water on my knees which usually helps - but this time my right knee became very swollen - I was in agony until I put ice on it. Two days later I still have difficulty walking seems like pain is around the joint not in it - I went to physio - still only mild improvements - do you have any ideas on what happened and what I should do?
thanks XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Looks like oa flare up

Detailed Answer:
hello,
I think the exertion, has triggered inflammation, you need to take an anti inflammatory drug, like diclofenac or paracetamol for a few days, in order to reduce the inflammation.
the drugs for osteoarthritis are usually safe.
