Hi, I Have A Relative Who Has Been Experiencing Bloating
Question: Hi,
I have a relative who has been experiencing bloating and vomiting after quite heavy meals the past two weeks. She has experienced this on three occasions. The bloating seems to occur quite a few hours after the meals so is not immediate and suggestive of bacterial or viral issues.
She has had higher than normal range testosterone levels and has tried diabex tablets 500 mg twice daily with meals. The GP has stated that this could be a treatment for the high testosterone levels.
She has also had tablets previously for an underactive thyroid.
Could the diabex tablets be leading to these symptoms or should they be investigated further?

The most common cause of high testosteron levels in females is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome(PCOS) and Metformin(Diabex) is one of the recommended treatement for this condition.
So,i can deduce that your wife has PCOS.
Diarrhea,Nausea,vomiting and abdominal cramps are common side effects of metformin.Usualy,these symptoms appear when you start taking Metformin.
In your wife's case,the symtopms are not related to Diabex.
If she had not fever and diarrhea(that can be suggestive of viral gastroenteritis) abdominal bloating and nausea can be related to foods sge eat.
These symptoms will typically resolve after your body has had time to digest whatever has upset your stomach.
My advice is to consult physically a local gastroenterologist because the symptoms persist for 2 weeks.
About the treatement for underactive thyroid ,it is very important to take this treatement in the morning 20 min before breakfast.

Yes the diabex tablets were taken as my wife was suspected of having PCOS. However, there were no signs of this on an ultrasound scan for the issue.
The bloating and vomiting did start after taking metformin as it was started roughly three weeks ago. However, the bloating did not immediately appear at first and appeared about a week after starting the course of medication and there was a diet change at that point to heavier meals in the evening. Could the symptoms still be caused by metformin intake?
I will also see if I can follow up with a gastroenterologist.

As i said earlier,Metformine can cause gastrointestinal symptoms as side effect.
In this case ,the symptoms will disappear,if you stop taking Metformin.
If the gastrointestinal symptoms persist and your wife can not tolerate them,i suggest to discuss with your wife's treating doctor about the possibility of "Stop Metformine" or change therapy for PCOS.
