Question: Hi, I am a 24 year old, healthy male. I am 6’1, 190lbs and active. I exercise almost daily, and have for years. My entire life, I have gotten muscle twitches, and never thought anything about them. I’ve also experienced tingling in my legs occasionally after a long walk, on a hot day. Over the last year, I have started to pay attention to the twitches, as they have increased. I experience muscle twitches, or as I call them tics, almost daily. They are widespread, and bilateral. Most commonly in my thighs, hamstrings, calves, and triceps. They aren’t always long lasting, most of the time it’s like a single “hit” here and there, just enough out the day. Almost like it’s right underneath my skin. Other times, I may have a twitch in my trice that’s lasts an hour.

Possible contributors - I started dental school about a year and a half ago. This is around the time I noticed they were happening pretty much all of the time. I asked my doctor about it around 6 months ago and he said it’s likely stress.
I started taking a multivitamin, thinking it could also be a electrolyte or mineral imbalance, and that may have helped it some, but I honestly can’t say for certainty. It’s definitely not as bad as it was this time last year, but it’s still occurring almost daily definitely every week.

For more info - I have not lost any strength or muscle mass, in fact I’d say I have gained both. I haven’t noticed any serious complications that could be associated with these ticks/twitches, other than they are annoying and casual even more stress when you think about the possibilities it could be.

Just curious on some opinions into this.

Brief Answer:
It seems non serious

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I have gone through your query and here is my advice.

As per your history, it does not look serious as you don't have muscle loss /weaken muscles. It may be due to excessive exertion and dehydration as lactic acid accumulates in muscle.

Still for further assessment I would suggest you to consult with physician for detailed clinical examination.

He may procure complete hemogram, vitamin D/B, thyroid profile, electrolytes including potassium, calcium, electromyography as per evaluation to rule out any other possibilities for electrolytes imbalance /nutritional deficiency/muscle disorder.

Further treatment mainly depends upon the underlying condition. Till then keep your self hydrated. Take balanced diet.

Avoid excessive exertion/stress. Take proper rest. Avoid smoking if you have it.

Hope I have answered your query...
