Hi Dr. Kakkar! As You Know, I Suffer From A

Question: Hi Dr. Kakkar! As you know, I suffer from a lot of health anxiety and you’ve helped me many times with my neurotic skin questions! I have a lot of age and sun spots on the top of my hands and arms, and last week I had a treatment with a licensed esthetician here in New York called Vascutouch, in which a probe was placed on top of the spots and it used radio frequency to ablats them. Apparently the treatment is used for vascular lesions, sebaceous hyperplasia, milia etc. I had just not had a full skin cancer screening by my Derm and all was fine, with no areas of concern. I’m attaching pics of the tops of my hands and arms before treatment and how they look now, with some scabs which seem to be healing just fine. Do you feel it was okay to have this treatment done (of course my overthinking mind kicks into gear after the fact)? And also...if there had been any worrisome spots that were treated (and there weren’t...it was just some sebaceous hyperplasia and tiny capillaries on my face and the sun spots on my arms and hands and possibly a freckle or two on my arm) they would simply reoccur so that I would see them and get to my Derm to have them checked, correct? Thanks again for always being there!!

Brief Answer:
Benign spots

Detailed Answer:
Hello there.
Hope you are fine.

I have reviewed the before and after images of hands and arms. The spots on your hands and arms before treatment seem absolutely benign - small-sized, light brown, well defined, uniformly colored and similar looking spots.

They seem like seborrheic keratosis and freckles and they seem to be healing well after treatment.

Nothing to worry.
Regards

Hi Dr. Kakkar!! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again...you have been my godsend and you are truly THE BESt!! My darned anxiety is a bit ramped up because we’re going through some health issues with my mother-in-law (wish you were a nephrologist as well so I could ask you about her lol!).

Two quick follow up questions:

Those white spots on my arms are harmless, correct? They’re more visible because we just got back from Florida and I got some sun there...

I’m looking into getting some IPL treatment on the tops of my hands and tops of my arms for the residual hyperpigmentation and underlying damage (I’ve had IPL on my face before)...do you think that may help?

Thank you again for always being there for me!!!

Brief Answer:
Regarding white spots on arms

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

The white spots are most likely those of Idiopathic Guttate Hypomelanosis (IGH). It is a harmless condition. I don't think an IPL is really indicated or is going to be very helpful for the photodamage on arms and hands. Though you can take IPL on face for rejuvenation and stimulating collagen. For your arms, just keep using a sunscreen regularly. Take care
