Question: Hi Doctor,

My daughter is 2 years 5 months old. She is having following symptoms:

1. She was having runny nose since saturday.
2. She had vomited yesterday morning and then again twice thrice during the day. 3. Fever around 100 to 102 F
4. She was touching her stomach sometimes as if she was having some pain
5. She seems to have loose motions today

Just to give you a background.... She went to play outside on Saturday during the day first in a covered play area having air conditioning and then outside in a park when it was hot. Though, it was not in direct sunlight but, it was hot. Can this temperature difference be a cause of vomiting and her current condition?

We have given her following medicines till now:

1. Calpol 1.9 ml SOS
2. Emeset 5 ml yesterday evening and 5 ml today morning. She has not vomited after yesterday evening till today.
3. We are giving her ORS though she is having it only while sleeping. Probably she is not liking the taste while she is awake.

Please suggest what shall we do for loose motions and what else shall we do? Previously, we had given her Enterogermina when she had loose motions few months back.
Also, please suggest the dosage of Emeset as I am not sure if it is 5ml once a day or it can be given 5ml SOS. If there are any precautions regarding food etc,
Please suggest the overall course of action for her current condition.

Brief Answer:
Possibly viral

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for using the Ask a Doctor service.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concern. Your child is possibly suffering from a viral infection which could contribute to the runny nose as well as the vomiting and loose stools. Irrespective of treatment it is likely to last for about 5 days or so. Management is supportive.

You can give Enterogermina - one ampule twice daily for the next few days. Let me know the body weight and I will suggest if 5 ml Emerset would be appropriate. However, for a child of her age, 5 ml should be sufficient. Give it 15-30 mins before feeds to enable the child retain the feeds. Continue to give ORS.

In any case, you need to give your child some antispasmodic like decolic as and when needed. The mainstay of treatment is ORS (oral rehydration solution). The mainstay of treatment is ORS (oral rehydration solution). Unless the lost salts and fluids are replenished the child would become dehydrated. The urine output needs to be monitored. If the frequency is more than 6 times in 24 hours it is fine. If the frequency comes down it indicates dehydration and calls for additional supplementation of fluids. But if the child becomes lethargic you would need to take the child to a hospital without delay. The cause is self-limiting and does not need to be treated with antibiotics unless the stool is blood stained.

Give zinc supplements like Zinconia Syr 5 ml once daily for the next 10 days. You need not worry. It should gradually return back to normal.

Do not forcefeed the child. It is preferrable to avoid milk and fruit juices for the time being.

Feel free to write back.

Hi Doctor,

Her weight is approx. 13.5 KGs. Please suggest the dosage of Emeset.
Just to confirm, we have to give Enterogermina 5 ml ampule twice a day means 10 ml in a day?

Understood that fruit juices have to be avoided but, can we give solid fruits like apple, banana etc?

Also, can we give curd in this situation or that also has to be avoided? Please suggest.

Curd is good

6ml Emeset per dose, given three times a day if needed.
You can give solid fresh cut fruits.
Enterogermina 5 ml per dose, twice such.
Also give curd. It contains beneficial bacteria.

Hi Doctor,
My daughter is better now. We have not given her milk for last 2 days and she had motion only once today and it was normal.

1. Shall we continue giving Enterogermina ( 2 ampules daily) for 5 days even if she has normal motions now or shall we stop? We have given Enterogermina for 2 days till now.

2. Shall we start giving her milk or it has to be avoided for more days?
Please suggest.

Brief Answer:
Enterogermina can be stopped

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Usually we prefer to avoid milk for about a week but if the stool is in control and she is otherwise doing well, you can give it a try.

Meanwhile you can stop giving Enterogermina but please continue to give curd or yogurt (homemade).

Ensure proper fluid intake.

Brief Answer:
Dose mentioned

Detailed Answer:
Your daughter needs around 2mg Dicyclomine per dose. You are talking about Decolic Drop each ml of which contains Dicyclomine (10mg) + Activated Dimethicone/Simethicone (40mg). So, you would need to give 0.25 ml of this.
