Hey doctor for the last week I’ve been getting aches and sometimes sharp pains on the lower left abdominal side. I’ve also had loose stools the last week as well however I did have some harder stools last night. I have had IBS and gastric reflux for a number of years but I’ve never really had lower left sided pain. I also had a colonoscopy and gastroscopy 2 years ago which were clear as well and ruled out things like celiac disease. My question is what do you think it could be i was worried it was appendicitis but i read that was on the lower right side and symptoms are severe and develop quickly? I’m not getting pain on the right side could it possibly still be that though I’m also obviously still eating plus m passing stools and gas ? I went to my gp a week back because I also noticed a lump on the lower left side she felt around sent me for an ultrasound and nothing seemed out of place it was just a vein since I’m quite a skinny guy at 55kg and when she felt my tummy it was fine. I’m not on any medications or anything either but my diet the last couple of weeks has been pretty bad I’ve been out a lot and eating take away I’ve also had a bit of dairy too could it possibly be I’m lactose intoralent now I was tested a year ago though? I also find the pain is more noticeable when sitting down but if I’m walking around or laying down not so much in terms of the pain but it does sometimes get sharp when I’m walking like a stitch.

Brief Answer:
Could be diverticulitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for choosing "Ask a Doctor" service for your query,
Have seen your details and I appreciate your concerns,

Most likely cause of pain in your case is diverticulitis.
Diverticulitis is the cause of left sided pain.
CT scan abdomen has to be done to find out the cause of pain.
Very likely your pain could be due to diverticulitis.
Go for a CT scan abdomen to rule out the cause of the problem.
Follow up with reports of CT.
Thank you.

Hey doctor thanks for the follow-up, when I did my colonoscopy 2 years back I had an almost identical pain on the left side to what I am having now but it turned out to be nothing and especially not diverticulitis, the colonoscopy was clear plus my gastroenterologist said because of my age it is very unlikely to be that. What else do you think it could be? Do I really have to be super worried about it with my current symptoms I also had the ultrasound which was clear too? I just am going overseas at the end of this week for 8 days do you think it could wait until then what sort of symptoms would warrant it being serious?

Just to add my diet is quite high fiber and includes a variety of vegetables however as I mentioned the last couple of weeks I have been pretty slack and I have been eating junk food could this be more so the cause of my symptoms and maybe has triggered my IBS off should I be avoiding eating certain things?

Just to add to get your thoughts on it and this may also be the reason for the pain but coincidentally the last couple of weeks I have had a lot of dairy could I may be lactose intolerant now can this cause pain and inflammation in the lower left side what test do I do for this?

Brief Answer:
Follow

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
For lactose tolerance the test to be done is lactose tolerance test.
This test would tell if you are lactose intolerant or not.
I think the sudden change in your diet is the cause of pain.Taking lots of junk and excluding fibers from diet may cause bad gut Flora to florish and may lead to inflammation.
I would suggest you to wait wait for a week.
If not taking probiotic take Econorm twice daily.
Keep fibers high in diet.
If you have any antispasmodic medicine with you include it in your diet e.g Dicyclomine for 2-3 days.
I think the problem would settle down with proper diet and medication.
Thank you!
