Question: Hello...i am having an insurance problem involving lumbar problem. MRI report..At the L4/5 level, there is mild loss of disc volume and hydration signal. There is moderate to marked facet joint hypertrophy with
chondral loss and facet joint fluid. Adjacent to the left facet joint anteriorly, there is a synovial cyst (9mm), causing marked narrowing
of the left lateral recess. There is marked flattening of the descending left L5 nerve root. The descending right L5 nerve root, and
exiting L4 nerve roots are normal.
I am a vet 67 years old and been in practice for 42 years and surgery has been a major part of my work. Especially over the last 18 mths doing 4-5 hours non stop at a time.
Is it possible that over the years my work has contributed to my problem. I understand that there is an ageing factor but as well as lifting dogs and surgery I would propose this has contributed.
I would be like an expert opinion on this matter....Thank you DR Gavin Hay BVSc

Brief Answer:
Physiotherapy, exercise else surgery

Detailed Answer:
Dear sir,
As per your mri report there is compression over L5 nerve root, sir go for physiotherapy, anti inflammatory, back strengthening exercises, hot fomentation,it will definately sort out your problem else you have to go for surgery to free your L5 nerve root from compression.you can also apply crepe bandage over your calf muscles while standing for long time,it will ease your pain.
Thanks

You haven't answered my question...I am not interested in treatment. Is there a spinal specialist who could give his opinion on the cause...beside the aging process of wear and tear is it possible my work has contributed...That was my question

Brief Answer:
Its all about degenerative changes

Detailed Answer:
Dear sir
facet joint arthropathy and disc degeneration both are caused by degenerative changes over time ,how ever life style add ons the wear and tear over degenerative changes as you said you have to stand for a long time and lifting up dogs.this is aging process + wear and tear due to life style
