Brief Answer:
The risk is extremely low but unfortunately, it is not zero

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,

I carefully read your query and understand your concern. Oral intercourse is thought to have an extremely low risk for HIV transmission.

This risk is more pronounced if there has been contact with blood such as if there were sores in the mouth or in the genital organs or if there was contact with menstrual blood.

It is not fully known for sure how much is the percentage of transmission through oral intercourse but is considered as the least risky when it comes to transmission of HIV compared to vaginal and anal intercourse. Even though the risk is very low with oral intercourse, it is not zero. Thus, if you had a random unknown partner, you may need to have an HIV test now and repeat it in three months to make sure (just to be on the safe side).

I hope this answers your query and is helpful. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
