What Could Causes Recurrent Fainting Spells After Recovering From Nausea And Gastro Infection?

Posted on Thu, 29 Apr 2021
Question: Hello, over last few years I have developed a near-fainting spells,
usually after I stand up after driving and drinking strong coffee.
I dismissed it as normal blood circulation problem, and my blood tests
were always ok. Today however I actually collapsed at a store after sitting in my car
for 30 min and having had a strong coffee in the morning.
Would appreciate any theories / suggestions for tests. Im thinking a good ct scan is in order since i just turned 40…
What do you recommend?
Thanks very much.

p.s. i have a history of hiatal hernia,
try to deal with it by sleeping on 2 pillows.
dont have any pains relted to it for a while.
However recently I had a prolnged nausea for 5 weeks or so, which now has disappeared after
culminating in a gastro infection.

I would explain as follows:

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

I passed carefully through your concern and would like to explain that your fainting symptomtology seems to be very likely related to orthostatic intolerance. This is supported by the fact it usually happens after taking the upright position. Drinking coffee is another triggering factor.

Coming to this point, what would help to clarify the issue of orthostatic intolerance, after having normal blood tests would be to go through a more specific test in this regard: head up tilt testing.

Before getting to tilt testing it is necessary to perform a cardiac ultrasound and possibly an ambulatory 24 hours ECG test (Holter monitoring).

You should discuss with your doctor on the above mentioned issues.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

In case of any further questions, feel free to ask em again.

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
