Hello, I've Had A Sore Throat On And Off For

default
Posted on Tue, 20 Nov 2018
Question: Hello, I've had a sore throat on and off for the last month or so on my right side. Around the same time I started having a sore throat I noticed some red/flesh colored bumps around my right tonsil (mostly on the arch above my tonsil). I'm concerned as they haven't gone away and it's been more than a month. I do have acid reflux so I was wondering if this is what caused them. My main concern is that the lumps are cancerous. I haven't had any rapid weight loss or fatigue.

Note: The two photos attached were taken a few days apart. The first one was taken on Friday and the other one was taken today.

Brief Answer:
Accessory or ectopic lymphoid tissue...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

I have examined the images thoroughly and understood your problem. The fleshy bumps over the tonsillar pillar is known as ectopic or accessory lymphoid follicles.

These accessory lymphoid tissues are noticed in the mucosa of the oral cavity as a result of immune response to the chronic local inflammation or infection. In your case, it could be due to the laryngo-pharyngeal reflux secondary to the acid reflux disease.

Do not worry! These are harmless swellings and not a sign of cancer. Treatment of the cause may help in regression of this swelling.

The remedies include:
1. Drinking frequent sips of warm water. Warm water promotes blood circulation, there by, reducing the inflammatory mediators and the swelling.
2. Try taking proton pump inhibitors after consulting your doctor.
3. Avoid smoking/fizzy drinks, chilled or hot food and beverages.

Hope this answers your query; I will be available for the follow-up queries.
