Question: Hello,

I was diagnosed with HSV-2 two years ago, but i have never had any sores, outbreaks or anything. I know it can lie dormant for years, but I’ve never had a symptom. Also, I was only blood tested and they didn’t take a swab. Should I get retested to see if it was a false positive?

Brief Answer:
The blood test is very accurate in detecting herpes, no need for a swab test

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service.
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

A blood test is 100 percent accurate in detecting a herpes infection.
In your case, the infection must have been subclinical.
That’s why you didn’t develop any blisters and erosions.

I don’t think there is any need to go for the swab test.

Dr. Asmeet
