I Ve Had This Cold For About Eight Days Now; Started As Upper Chest Pain, Then Came A Nasty Sore Throat Said It Was Bronchitis Prescribed Me An Azithromycin Z-pack My Question Is, My Chest Is Hurting Off An On Pretty Regularly, I'm Coughing Quite Alot, And I'm Lethargic Can A Cold Last For More Than A Week And Produce Chest Pain Like This?
Question: Hello,
I've had this cold (I'm 99% sure it is) for about eight days now; started as upper chest pain, then came a nasty sore throat. Sore throat went away quickly last week but I've had a nasty cough that occasionally produces phlegm but not enough for me to cough up. Went to a doc and had a chest x-ray, they said it was Bronchitis (no evidence of pneumonia or anything). They prescribed me an Azithromycin z-pack, which I started yesterday.
My question is, my chest is hurting off an on pretty regularly, I'm coughing quite alot, and I'm lethargic...can a cold last for more than a week and produce chest pain like this?
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Cold itself can not cause this kind of chest pain.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Cold itself can not last for this long. Cold also itself can not cause chest pain.
But cold can complicate as bronchitis (inflammation of airways) and this can cause chest pain and prolonged symptoms.
In my opinion, you should definitely take combination of painkiller and anti inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and acetaminophen for faster relief.
Do warm water gargles and steam inhalation 4-5 times a day.
Drink plenty of fluids orally and keep yourself hydrated.
You will mostly improve with all these in 1 week.
Please let me know if you are a smoker.
I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health.
Thanks.

Thank you for the response doctor.
I havent been taking painkillers so I will start. I'm just coughing a lot and I'm wondering if the coughing from bronchitis is causing the chest pain (either the lungs or muscles are sore), or if something else is going on. I'm guessing the chest x-ray would've caught that though yes?

No I do not have breathlessness.
Just a chest discomfort/pressure, stuffy nose, and horrible cough. I’m trying not to worry and hope that this will eventually pass but it feels like it’s dragging on and on.

Sounds good. Thank you doctor. I went to an urgent care last night; they did an EKG and a chest x-ray, both came back normal. So they attributed this to being a really bad bronchitis. Does that sound about right with these symptoms?
